There is also two nature reserves and these are excellent places to explore

Uphill Hill – Nature Reserve

Uphill Hill Local Nature Reserve is located to the south of the village of Uphill, which is itself just south of Weston super Mare. This 17 hectare site is owned by North Somerset Council and is popular with the local community. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), Uphill Hill is part of the Mendip Limestone Grasslands Special Area of Conservation, (SAC) supporting a diverse flora and valuable insect habitat.

The site lies on carboniferous limestone, which has been formed into a sheer face by quarrying at the western edge. A very diverse flora is found on the rock ledges of the disused quarry and steeper slopes of the Hill. An outstanding display of cowslips, primroses and green winged orchids covers the northern and eastern hill slopes in the Spring. The rest of the site is more level and gently sloping and consists of semi-improved calcareous grassland.

A tower tops the Hill and can be climbed for a panoramic view. Archaeological features include a disused lime kiln, a sheepwash and a powder house.

A steering group oversees the management of the site, which is carried out in conjunction with English Nature and the Avon Wildlife Trust (the site is also immediately adjacent to Walborough LNR owned by the Avon Wildlife Trust). Two volunteer wardens also monitor the site.

Access: By Car- Follow signs to Uphill Village from the southern end of Weston super Mare. Uphill leads towards the south end of Weston beach. Head towards the beach but turn in near the large sluice gates on the left and continue along the track towards the boat yard. A small car-park is situated at the reserve entrance, on the left hand side. There is also limited parking in spaces adjacent to Uphill Way.

By Foot: The Tidal Trail runs through the west of the reserve and is suitable for disabled users and there are public footpaths across the Hill. Dog owners are respectfully asked to keep their dogs on a lead when grazing animals are on site.

Weston Woods – Nature Reserve

This 130 hectare woodland site covers the ridge on the north side of Weston super Mare. The site is owned and managed by North Somerset Council. Much of the site was clear felled during world War One and has naturally re-vegetated. A management regime to address the even aged structure of the Wood began in 1998.

There is also a small area of ancient woodland within the site known as Ashcombe Wood. Local people greatly value the site for its recreation and landscape value as well as for the range of wildlife including deer, badgers, foxes, bats and a range of birds including woodpeckers, buzzards and tree creepers. The site also contains an Iron Age hill fort covering about 10 hectares which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Access:
From Worlebury Hill Road, Weston super Mare. Limited parking spaces can be found at the edge of this road. Walk through the gated entrance into the woods.

Weston super Mare has one of the longest sandy beaches in the UK

Weston beach has won an award for cleanliness, safety and water quality for the past nine years, making it a lovely beach to enjo.

Weston also has the second highest tidal range in the world. averaging 11/13 meters but anything up to 15 meters can be expected in the right conditions.

To get the times of the tides click here

Dogs are welcome all year round on the beach at:

Sand Bay

between the Grand Pier and Knightstone Island, Weston

from Royal Sands, Weston to Uphill.

Between 1 May and 30 September there is a ban on dog walking between the Grand Pier and Royal Sands, Weston. The beach at Marine Lake in Weston and Clevedon is a dog free area all year round. Guide dogs are exempt from these rules. For a copy of a map of the areas visit our dog control order maps page.

All public access land in North Somerset is a poop-scoop area, including the beaches.Beach

Safety

We want you to enjoy your holiday, and be aware that there are specific dangers with soft sand and mud, not to mention the sea itself. We ask that you supervise children at all times and observe the safety signs on the seafront and the beach.

Remember that it is dangerous to approach the water at low tide and any inflatable craft you use in the water should be tethered when used in the channel.

When parking on the beach always check the time and height of the tide (vehicles can and do get stuck in the mud) and drivers are required to obey the 15mph speed limit at all times.

Quad bikes and other motorised bikes are not permitted on the beach and all vehicles are prohibited from entering the sand dunes.

The Weston-Super-Mare SeaQuarium was opened in 1995, and was placed upon the first seaside pier to be built in Great Britain for over 85 years. Situated on the beach, the aquarium is surrounded by 3 miles of sand along the coast of Somerset, with panoramic views across the estuary of Wales.

The centre contains an amazing underwater tunnel, providing visitors with a closer look into the depths of our oceans. With sharks, rays and other creatures swimming gracefully past, just inches away. It doesn’t stop there, with over 25 displays throughout the aquarium, visitors can see the beauty and terror of the oceans creatures, from the severn estuary to the wonders of the rainforest rivers.

SeaQuarium Weston is open daily from 10am.
(Last admissions at 4pm, centre closes at 5pm)
(Closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day & Boxing Day)
